I will give them in My house and in My walls a place and a name…an everlasting name which will not be discontinued. Isaiah 56:5 Our visit to Israel’s Holocaust memorial park, Yad Vashem, reminded us of HaShem’s promise to give us all the land of Canaan for eternity, as well as the need for Israel to be a Jewish homeland. First, we looked at the greenery featuring trees dedicated to the few Righteous among the Nations who stood in the minority against the Nazis to save Jews. Later, we toured the prism-shaped kaleidoscope structure that led us through the darkening events of the Shoah (Holocaust). As we toured other parts of the massive complex, we were reminded of the uniqueness of the attempt to annihilate the world’s Jewry. Though genocides occur throughout history none were as systematic as the Holocaust. However, their was a light at the end of the horrors- Israel. We left the Yad VaShem complex, trotting up the side of Mt. Herzl, a national cemetery for those who supported and died to keep Israel strong. Not only were fallen soldiers buried there, from a ten year old to a sixty-seven year old, but also prime ministers from Golda Meir to Yitzhak Rabin. Today, Israel stands as a comfort for all Jews. Finally, we wrapped up the day where some visited synagogues for Kabbalat Shabbat while others danced to Lecha Dodi at the Kotel, The Western Wall. As Herzl said in 1896, “If you will it, it is no dream; Israel is a result of the will and devotion of the Jewish people.
